Consumption vs Production
I like the axis of Consumption vs Production as one lens for categorizing my hobbies. At the simple level, reading is a Consumption habit, whereas writing is Production. Then you get blurrier - watching TV is definitely Consumption, but what about debating the latest episode on Reddit? Playing videogames, Consumption, but playing videogames socially, like in an MMO? Or even more, being a guild leader, crafting community and activities for others? Has a lot more Production elements.
I don't have hard and fast rules for these but the natural definitions lead to some interesting conclusions. Production feels like making something that other people want to Consume. So what if you do some kind of productive hobby, but ultimately only care for what you get out of it? You whittle wood to while away the hours, but never do anything with your work. Seems pretty Consumptive.
Which is not to say bad. Neither of these categories has a clean mapping to Good or Bad. But I sometimes find myself wishing I was spending more time on one than the other (mostly wishing less Consumption, but not always). And having these categories feels like another useful way of introspecting.
