Why Superman
The superhero is an iconic trope of storytelling. It appears in cultures around the globe, perhaps in slightly different clothing. Perhaps you have a Chosen One1, the Messiah or some other character type with abilities beyond the pale. And while these characters often end up fighting battles far beyond the ordinary, they often start with struggles we face in the real world. They solve problems we struggle with because of their specialness. They encapsulate a fantasy of how easy it would be to wipe things away if we were a little more special. They distract us from the difficulty of solving our problems as our normal selves. Or perhaps they forgive us for not triumphing by showing it takes inhuman ability to prevail. They offer escape - alternatives to our reality. And also a tinge of hope. Superman could just fly away, but he doesn't.
